Asian Handicap Explained: Lines, Examples and Odds Formats
Asian handicap gives one football team a goal start, such as -0.5 or +0.25, so both sides have close to even chances. You win if your team still comes out ahead after the handicap. Quarter-goal lines split your stake over two lines, so you can win half or lose half.

Asian handicap is the most popular football market on Malaysian sportsbooks such as SBOBET and Maxbet. It removes the draw from the equation and evens out matches between a strong and a weak team. The lines look confusing at first, especially the quarter-goal ones, but each follows one simple idea.
The basic idea
The bookmaker gives the weaker team a head start in goals. You then bet as if the match started with that score. If you back the favourite at -1, your team must win by two goals for a full win, because one goal is cancelled by the handicap.
In Malaysian betting slang, the favourite is said to give the ball (让球) and the underdog to receive it (受让).
Level ball (0)
Neither side gets a start. If your team wins, you win. If it is a draw, your stake is returned. If your team loses, you lose.
Half-goal lines (-0.5, +0.5, -1.5 ...)
Half-goal lines can never be a push, because no match ends with half a goal.
- -0.5: your team must win. A draw or loss loses the bet.
- +0.5: your team must win or draw.
- -1.5: your team must win by two or more.
Whole-goal lines (-1, -2 ...)
With -1, a two-goal win is a full win, a one-goal win returns your stake, and a draw or loss is a loss. The underdog at +1 is the mirror image.
Quarter-goal lines (-0.25, -0.75, +0.25 ...)
A quarter line splits your stake equally across the two neighbouring lines. This is where half wins and half losses come from.
| Line | Split into | Win by 1 | Draw | Lose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| -0.25 | 0 and -0.5 | Full win | Half lost | Lost |
| -0.75 | -0.5 and -1 | Half won, half returned | Lost | Lost |
| +0.25 | 0 and +0.5 | Lost | Half won | Lost |
Read the "Win by 1" column for the favourite you backed and the "Lose" column as your team losing.
Worked example
You stake RM100 on Selangor -0.75 at odds of 1.90 (decimal). RM50 goes on -0.5 and RM50 on -1.
- Selangor win 2-0: both halves win. Return RM95 + RM95 = RM190.
- Selangor win 1-0: the -0.5 half wins (RM95 returned), the -1 half is a push (RM50 returned). Total RM145, a profit of RM45.
- Draw: both halves lose. Return RM0.
Over/under (大小)
Instead of who wins, you bet on total goals. Over 2.5 wins with three or more goals. Quarter lines such as 2.25 split the stake the same way as handicaps: with exactly two goals, Over 2.25 loses half and returns half.
Odds formats
Malaysian sportsbooks let you switch between formats. They all describe the same price.
- Decimal (EU): total return per 1 staked, including the stake. 1.90 returns RM19 on RM10.
- Hong Kong (HK): profit per 1 staked. 0.90 HK equals 1.90 decimal.
- Malay (MY): positive numbers work like Hong Kong odds. Negative numbers show what you risk to win 1: -0.80 means you stake RM8 to win RM10, and lose only RM8 if it loses.
- Indonesian (Indo): like American odds divided by 100. +1.50 means win RM15 on RM10; -1.25 means stake RM12.50 to win RM10.
In-play handicaps
During the match, lines are based on the remaining play. Most sportsbooks settle in-play Asian handicap only on goals scored after your bet was accepted. Check the market rules on the platform you use, as SBOBET, Maxbet and CMD368 publish their own.
Mix parlay
You can combine several handicap or over/under selections in one ticket. The odds multiply, and half-win and half-loss results are applied to that leg's price. Every leg must at least push for the ticket to pay.
Tips before you bet
- Compare the same match across lines: -0.5 at 2.05 and -0.75 at 2.25 describe different risks, not a free upgrade.
- Know your format. Misreading a negative Malay price is the most common beginner mistake.
- Keep stakes level. Chasing a lost bet in the second half rarely ends well.

More worked examples
Underdog at +0.25. You back Kedah +0.25 for RM100 at 1.95. Half (RM50) is on level ball and half on +0.5. If the match is drawn, the level-ball half is returned (RM50) and the +0.5 half wins (RM97.50), for a total of RM147.50. If Kedah lose by one goal, both halves lose.
Favourite at -1.25. RM100 at 1.92 is split between -1 and -1.5. A one-goal win: the -1 half is returned (RM50), the -1.5 half loses. Total RM50 back. A two-goal win: both halves win, RM192 back.
Over 2.75. RM100 at 1.88 is split between over 2.5 and over 3. Exactly three goals: the 2.5 half wins (RM94), the 3 half is returned (RM50), so RM144 back.
Frequently asked questions
Why do handicap odds change before kick-off?
Prices move with team news, such as injuries and line-ups, and with the weight of money placed on each side. A line can also move from -0.5 to -0.75 when the bookmaker thinks the favourite is stronger.
Does extra time count?
Normally no. Asian handicap and over/under on football are settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time unless the market name says otherwise.
Is Asian handicap better than 1X2?
It is not better or worse, just different. Handicaps remove the draw and usually have lower margins than three-way markets, which is why many Malaysian bettors prefer them.
