Baccarat Rules for Malaysian Players: How to Play and Bet

Baccarat compares two hands, Player and Banker, and the one closer to 9 wins. You bet on Player, Banker or Tie before the cards are dealt. Banker wins slightly more often, so it pays 0.95 to 1 on standard tables; Player pays 1 to 1 and Tie usually pays 8 to 1.

Baccarat is the most played table game in Asian live casinos, and it is easy to see why: there are no decisions to make once you have placed your bet, rounds take under a minute, and the odds are among the best in the casino. This guide covers everything you need before you sit at a live table.

The goal

Two hands are dealt: Player and Banker. These are just names; you are not the player and the casino is not the banker. You bet on which hand will finish closer to 9, or that they will tie.

Card values

  • Ace counts as 1.
  • Cards 2 to 9 count at face value.
  • 10, Jack, Queen and King count as 0.

Only the last digit of the total matters. A 7 and an 8 make 15, which counts as 5. A King and a 9 make 9, the best possible hand.

How a round is dealt

  1. Each hand receives two cards.
  2. If either hand totals 8 or 9 (a natural), both stand and the round is over.
  3. Otherwise, the Player hand may draw a third card, then the Banker hand may draw, following fixed rules.

Player's third card

Player draws on a total of 0 to 5 and stands on 6 or 7.

Banker's third card

If Player stood, Banker follows the same rule: draw on 0 to 5, stand on 6 or 7. If Player drew a third card, Banker's decision depends on its own total and on Player's third card:

Banker totalBanker draws if Player's third card is
0, 1, 2Always draws
3Anything except 8
42 to 7
54 to 7
66 or 7
7Always stands

You never have to apply these rules yourself. The dealer and the software do it automatically. They are worth knowing so the result never feels random.

The main bets and what they pay

BetPaysHouse edge (approx.)
Banker0.95 to 1 (5% commission)1.06%
Player1 to 11.24%
Tie8 to 114.4%

If the round is a tie, Banker and Player bets are returned on most tables. The Tie bet's high payout looks tempting, but its house edge is more than ten times higher than Banker's.

No-commission baccarat

Many Asian tables, including several in the M2WIN live lobby, offer no-commission baccarat. Banker wins pay 1 to 1, except when Banker wins with a total of 6, which pays only 1 to 2 (half your stake). The house edge on Banker is slightly higher than on a standard table, so check which version you are sitting at before you settle into a strategy.

Side bets

  • Player Pair / Banker Pair: the first two cards of that hand form a pair. Usually pays 11 to 1.
  • Dragon Bonus: pays when your chosen hand wins by a large margin or with a natural.
  • Lucky 6 / Super 6: pays when Banker wins with 6.

Side bets pay more but carry a much higher house edge. Treat them as an occasional extra, not a main bet.

Squeeze, speed and Lightning tables

Squeeze tables reveal the cards slowly for drama; the rules are the same. Speed tables shorten the betting window to about 15 seconds. Lightning Baccarat from Evolution adds random card multipliers and charges a small fee on every bet to fund them.

Road maps

Live tables display road maps such as the Big Road (大路) and Bead Plate (珠盘路) that record past results. They are a tradition and help you follow the table's history. They do not predict anything: each round is dealt from a shuffled shoe, and the cards have no memory of the previous hand.

A sensible way to play

  1. Watch a few rounds to learn the table's timer and layout.
  2. Choose a fixed unit, for example 1% of your session budget.
  3. Stick mainly to Banker or Player.
  4. Avoid systems that double after every loss. They need an unlimited bankroll and run into table limits fast.
  5. Stop at a set loss or a set time, whichever comes first.

When you are ready, the live casino lobby lists all baccarat tables by studio, including Evolution, Sexy Baccarat, Big Gaming and Hot Road.

Worked examples

Example 1. Player is dealt 4 and 3 (total 7). Banker is dealt King and 5 (total 5). Player stands on 7. Banker draws on 5 because Player stood, and receives a 2: Banker now has 7. The hands tie 7-7. Tie bets win at 8 to 1; Player and Banker bets are returned.

Example 2. Player has 2 and Ace (total 3) and draws a 6, making 9. Banker has 4 and 2 (total 6). Player's third card was 6, so the table says Banker draws on 6 against a third card of 6 or 7. Banker draws a Queen and stays on 6. Player wins 9-6.

Example 3. Player has 8 and Jack (total 8, a natural). The round ends immediately. Whatever Banker holds below 8, Player wins.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to always bet Banker?

Banker has the lowest house edge, so over many rounds it loses the least. Many experienced players bet mostly Banker, but it is still a game of chance and streaks of Player wins are normal.

Why do I pay commission on Banker?

Because the third-card rules let Banker win slightly more often. The 5% commission brings the Banker payout back in line so the house keeps a small edge on both sides.

Can I count cards in live baccarat?

Shoes are long and usually reshuffled well before the end, and the effect of removed cards on baccarat is tiny. Card counting gives no practical advantage at live tables.
